Teaching Science to Children in Grades 4 - 6

Course Overview:

This course will provide you with techniques, strategies and ideas to work with students grades 4-6 in the science classroom. You will review the skills needed to learn science and learn how you can foster those skills. You will look at types of lessons as well as types of assessments. After this course, you will have new, fresh approaches to help teach your science students in ways that engage and motivate them.

Students will:
  • Review the skills needed to learn science
  • Learn a variety of teaching methods that can help ensure student understanding
  • Learn techniques for assessment in the science classroom

Course Outline:

Lesson 1: What is science?

Lesson 1 will help you better understand what science is. You will examine the nature of scientific ideas as well as student perceptions about science.

Lesson 2: Skills students need to learn science

Lesson 2 will focus on skills students need to succeed in the science classroom. You will explore topics like questioning, observation inquiry and more.

Lesson 3: Using stories and role-play

In lesson 3 you will begin to look at creative and innovative ways you can teach science in your classroom. This particular lesson will focus on the use of stories and role-play to deliver science content.

Lesson 4: Using games and computers

Lesson 4 moves to examples of how you can use games and computers in your science classroom. You will learn ways you can use each of these to enrich and support your instruction.

Lesson 5: Outdoor science

Lesson 5 moves your science classroom outside. You will look at how to prepare outdoor space for students and how to engage kids in this different setting.

Lesson 6: Assessment in the science classroom

Lesson 6 focuses on assessment in the science classroom. You will focus on several types of assessment and case studies to demonstrate their use. 

All necessary materials are included.
